A fond mother watches her boy where he stands
\nApart from his comrades tonight,
\nAs they place on his camp-battered tunic, a badge…
\nAn Eagle, the emblem of right.<\/p>\n
It seems just a few short months have passed
\nSince he joined with the youngster next door…
\nHow proud he was then of his Tenderfoot Pin
\nAs they told of the message it bore.<\/p>\n
But the years have gone as he struggled along
\nTo learn what the Scout law’s about;
\nHe practiced them daily, the Oath and the law
\nUntil now, he’s an Eagle Scout.<\/p>\n
You may smile in your worldly old wisdom at this
\nAnd say, “Why, it’s only a pin.”
\nBut I tell you no honors he’ll gain as a man
\nWill mean quite as much to him.<\/p>\n
The Red, White and Blue of the ribbon you see
\nAre the symbols of honor and truth.
\nHe has learned how to value these fine attributes
\nIn the glorious days of youth.<\/p>\n
And the outflinging winds of the eagle that rests
\nOn the breast of this Knight of Today,
\nAre the things which will lift him above petty deeds
\nAnd guide him along the right way…<\/p>\n
Yes, it’s only a pin, just an Eagle Scout Badge,
\nBut the heart that’s beneath it beats true
\nAnd will throb to the last for the things which are good,
\nA lesson for me.. and for you.<\/p>\n
